The web is on strike!

Wondering why Wikipedia and other sites are down today?

They are protesting against PIPA (Protect IP Act) and SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) – proposed new pieces of American legislation that are designed to stop online piracy. Those against the new legislation fear it will be ineffective and will damage the openness of the web, for example, by censoring and even blocking websites with user generated content.

While these laws would apply only in the United States, if passed they will have an impact on internet users around the world, as the burden they place on website owners may make many small web startups impossible, and may make many larger sites impossible to maintain.
